When Angry Birds is played out and your kids don’t want to practice their ABC’s anymore, movies and TV shows turn the iPhone into a miniature, portable television. Downloaded shows can provide hours of entertainment on long car rides, plane trips or during ridiculous long wait times at the doctor’s office. However, the cost of downloading shows and movies can be high via iTunes. Fortunately, with a little pre-planning there are ways to download your favorite shows to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad for free!
TV Station Apps
An ever-expanding selection of popular television stations like CBS, Cartoon Network have iPhone apps that allow users to watch full-length episodes via their iPhone or iPad where a WiFi or 3G connection is available. Although a large backload of episodes aren’t typically available, this is a great way to catch up on favorite shows from a trusted source.
To get started, open the iTunes store and search for your favorite television channel in the app section, or check out these two:

Convert Your DVD’s:
Most of us have a stack of DVD’s around the house. They’re our favorites, and our kids’ favorites, that get popped in on rainy days or when an afternoon distraction is in high order.
These DVD’s can be converted for download and playback on your iPhone by compressing the file on a computer and syncing it to an iPhone. In order to complete the process, you will need to download a compression software to your computer, many of which are avaialble for quick download over the internet.
A podcast is defined by Apple as, “an episodic program delivered via the internet.” Podcasts are free and will sometimes feature popular television shows, or entertaining visual media compiled by the creator of the podcast. In fact, some great content from television channels like Discovery and TLC are available via free podcast subscriptions.
While podcasts are typically set to be best viewed on a computer, many are compatible with playback on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. To browse for podcasts that catch your interest, and offer great visual programming, simply browse the iTunes store. These are all available at no charge!
One Time Fee, Then Free!
Some sites offer unlimited downloads from a major database of movies and television shows for a one-time membership fee. The standard cost for lifetime iPhone download memberships at sites like this hover around $40.00. After paying the fee, members have access to downloading files from a wide range of options; all formatted to play on your iPhone.
Although $39.00 may initially sound steep, consider that some television series go for as much as $49.00 on iTunes, with popular movies in the $12 range.
