Which One is a Better Gaming Platform for Kids? Nintendo DS vs. iPod Touch

Nintendo-ds_lite The majority of today’s youth love to play video games in one form or another. There are plenty of options available, portable like iPod Touch, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, and stationary powerful consoles like Sony Playstation and Microsoft XBox. From what I’ve observed, Nintendo DS and iPod Touch are very popular particularly among younger kids. Which one to get? Below we chose the winner based on several factors! Read on.

Unfortunately, gaming platforms aren’t cheap. So, before rewarding your youngster with a gaming console, take a minute to review the options available for both the iPod Touch and Nintendo DS. If you’re going to make the investment, you may as well get the most bang for your gaming buck.

Price: The initial investment for a Nintendo DS will be right around $110 for the device itself. Conversely, a new iPod Touch can run anywhere from $200 to over $350 depending on the amount of storage that comes with the device.
Winner: Nintendo DS

Game Cost:  Games for the Nintendo DS are sold as cartridges that must be purchased from a store. Most games cost between $10 and $20 each. Games for the iPod Touch, however, can be downloaded anytime WiFi is available to the iTouch, directly from iTunes. Prices range from free to $10, however most are $0.99 to $2.99.
Winner: iPod Touch

Pieces & Parts: Adults have a hard enough time keeping track of their keys, so it’s not unreasonable to suspect a child is likely to lose the stylus and game cartridges for a Nintendo DS. We like that the iPod Touch contains everything in one sleek device, with no pieces and parts to lose on the go.
Winner: iPod Touch

Durability: The Nintendo DS is slightly more rugged than the iPod Touch due to its basic design. Because of the enclosed screen, the DS is more likely to survive a few accidental drops than the iTouch. However, cases can help greatly increase iPod Touch durability.
Winner: Tie if you get a case for iPod Touch

Controls: While the Nintendo DS features tactile gaming controls that most children are familiar with, literally anyone can figure out the controls of iPod Touch games. You simply touch the screen. Whether you’re 3 or 63, there’s very little learning curve involved with the iPod Touch.
Winner: Nintendo DS

Game Choice: There are an ever-growing number of games available for Nintendo DS users. However, the DS section at your favorite gaming store just doesn’t quite compare to what’s available in the virtual iTunes store. No matter what your child’s interest is, there is a game (or 10) available for quick download to the iPod Touch.
Winner: iPod Touch

For the investment and long term enjoyment, We’d recommend the iPod Touch as the better choice for a children’s gaming platform. Although the initial cost is somewhat higher than that of the Nintendo DS, the low cost of games and ability of the device to grow with the child makes it an ideal match for young gamers.
