When a kid gets in to something, they really get in to it. I once knew a boy who loved Shrek so much that I thought he may actually turn into an ogre. Every day he wore a Shrek t-shirt, toted around his Shrek lunch box and for Halloween his mom shoved a few pillows under a burlap sack and painted his face green. This was long before the days of the iPhone, but I know if he would have known about a Shrek app, that it undoubtedly would have been his favorite. No matter who your child’s favorite television character is, there is most likely an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad app that gives your kid the opportunity to learn and play while chilling out in the company of their favorite animated person. Or sponge, who lives in a pineapple under the sea.
Sponge Bob Tickler
The phenomenon of Sponge Bob is available on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad with Sponge Bob Tickler. This kid-friendly app lets users manipulate caricatures of their favorite Sponge Bob stars including Sponge Bob himself and everyone else from his Bikini Bottom crew of friends. Multiple games are also included in this app, giving kids quite a bit of entertainment for a $1.99 price tag.
Shrek Kart FREE
Price: Free / Full Version available for $4.99
Driving games are incredibly popular with kids and offer a chance to work on those go-kart driving skills from the living room. Shrek Kart gives users the opportunity to race Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots and other favorite characters along a go-kart course by moving the iPhone to steer. The free version has limited characters and courses to choose from while the full version, available for $4.99, allows users additional variety in courses and race car drivers.
Elmo’s Monster Maker
I think this app is beyond cool. Elmo’s Monster Maker gives users the opportunity to create their very own virtual Muppet monsters! Piece by piece, monsters are created and can be saved until a whole gang of furry friends has been made. Users begin by selecting a base body for their monster. They can then modify color, facial features and fur type to create cute little monster friends of all shapes and sizes. Think of this app as your child’s very own Sesame Street studio, because that’s exactly what this app looks like.
Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom Rainbow Ride
Seemingly intended for a younger audience, Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom Rainbow Ride has received mixed reviews from parents in the iTunes store. Kids help Dora collect all of the magical crystals in this app by steering her down a colorful rainbow slide. By tilting the iPhone or iPod Touch side to side, Dora whizzes down the rainbow chute to collect all of the crystals and save the kingdom. A coloring book is also included with the app. This app would be a great way for kids just learning to use the motion control features on a device and a hit with any little one that loves Dora the Explorer.
Toy Story 3 Operation Camouflage
Enjoy a little time with all of your favorite characte
rs from Toy Story 3 with this fun picture hunt game. Twenty different “missions” are available in the app, each of which ask users to locate items hidden in a scene from the movie. The intensity and difficulty can be cranked up by challenging users with a timer, or items can be found at the user’s own leisurely pace. I like that the app not only asks kids to find a “green cabinet,” but an “octagon” and “orange triangle,” as well. Get those little minds thinking!
